Reader,
For the last week and half it has felt like nothing has fit.
The smaller things were bothering me in bigger ways.
I felt overly critical about myself and just not like me.
Even a walk by the ocean didn’t really help.
And I didn’t know why. I just felt really, really off.
And then I was flipping through my calendar for the week and realized that we had entered May. In the past, May has held some life events that have been really hard.
It’s one of those months that sneaks up on me. That seems like it’s forever away and then I wake up and it’s staring me in the face. And for whatever reason, I never remember why May is so hard, until it arrives.
So that agitation? It wasn’t because of the laundry that needed putting away, the work project that needed fixing, the awful weather. It was because I had forgotten that this week is the 4th anniversary of my dad’s death.
And once I figured that out, it all made sense. Everything that was feeling so hard and like it was too much was because of that grief that was under the surface. It was affecting my capacity to engage in life.
And it isn’t something that needs to be fixed or solved.
But it is something that needs awareness.
Last month, in my Before You… workshop, we talked about capacity. Capacity is our ability to hold ourselves and navigate what’s happening. It has a direct effect on how we make decisions and choices, create things, solve problems – even how we perceive the world around us.
When our capacity is low, doing even simple things like checking items off our to-do list or making that phone call, seem monumental.
When we have a higher capacity, we’re more likely to be able to stretch, experiment, and take intuitive and calculated risks with a little more ease.
Capacity isn’t something that just magically happens. There are tools and techniques that can help us increase and hold greater capacity.
And…
As much as we want to be functioning at a higher capacity and doing all the things, all the time – it isn’t always possible.
That’s why creating a spiritual practice around capacity is so critically important. Not only do we become more aware of where we’re at, we can do things to support ourselves in that moment.
Yes, sometimes that means working on increasing it. And sometimes that means we have to intentionally meet it with grace when it’s low, rather than fix it.
For me, this week is just about letting it be a bit lower. Doing things that don’t require as much innovation and inspiration. Being very intentional with what I say yes to. Choosing to spend what capacity I have on the things that matter most. My garden, my family, self-care, two new clients.
The rest can be bumped to next week or even the week after.
What practices help you become aware of your capacity? And once you have that awareness, what changes do you make in your day to day life?
P.S. I’d love to know. Hit reply to this email and share your wisdom.
