✨ Is AI doing your discerning for you?

Reader,

What happens to discernment, meaning-making, intuition and personal authority when we introduce another tool like AI?

And what are we asking that tool to do for us?

These two questions have been on my mind a lot lately, especially with all the floor time AI has been getting in the news.

Whether you’re a fan or not, AI is here to stay.

And I know those are not small questions. And they don’t have easy answers. A single email isn’t going to even start to begin to unpack them. But we need to start having these conversations.

Just look at AI and discernment. When we enter something into AI, it gives us a response back. It’s programmed to give us answers or a solution. It’s programmed to be helpful. And that’s all well and good – there’s nothing wrong with that.

But at the same time, because it’s programmed to give us answers and be helpful, what it delivers to us can often make it feel like we’ve resolved things. It closes the loop of questioning very quickly.

Basically, it’s doing the discerning for us, rather than us doing it for ourselves. It’s deciding what is relevant and what isn’t.

And so sometimes it’s jumping to conclusions and coming to what feels like a complete answer as quickly as it can because it’s programmed to be helpful.

When we work with a tool like that, we have to remember that that’s its job. Someone said, hey do this. And for some things that’s exactly what we want.

But when we’re working in the areas of the soul, intuition, spiritual development, meaning-making, tarot, etc., it’s not always about getting to the answer right away.

And if you’ve ever gone down a soul or spiritual rabbit hole, you know that the first answer isn’t always the answer that we need.

Even if we aren’t using AI, sometimes the first answer we receive is just the first stepping stone and we need to continue to hop from stone to stone to get where we need to go.

The journey the questions take us on is more important than the conclusions we come to along the way.

But the way AI packages its answers, it can make it feel like that first stepping stone is also the final one.

And that’s why I think we need to be having more conversations about what AI means – what role it plays, if any at all – for those of us who are working with spiritual practices, tools, and asking the big existential questions.

Can AI get us there? Is it even capable of helping us with that?

It just so happens that my dear friend Debi Garrett and I have been having these kinds of conversations for a while now. We’ll meet up on Zoom and have a cup of tea and chat about all the things.

And on September 23rd, we want to invite you to join us for Tarot, AI & the Art of Knowing for Yourself: A Tea & Tarot Conversation.

We’re not going to spend an hour bashing AI nor will we spend the time fan-girling out about it either.

We’re going to sit down and get curious about what we’re asking AI to do for us and how does that work when it comes to the soul, intuition, and how we make meaning.

We’d love to have you join this free event. (And yes, there will be a replay, but if you show up live you get to be part of the convo and ask questions and share your own thoughts, too.)
