Reader,
We were a military family. And for over two decades, we moved every three, four years. Sometimes, it was even less. (I’m looking at you Indiana and our 9 months together!)
For about half those years, map apps didn't exist as we know them today. Especially when we were in Puerto Rico. OMG. We needed three different paper maps just to navigate the island – and even with all three it still wasn’t exactly right.
So when map apps – Google, Apple, Waze – arrived on scene it was an absolute gamechanger.
Suddenly, with a tap of a finger, I had access to the closest grocery store, gas station, and urgent care. I was finally the master of my own fate. No more waiting on someone to tell me where things were. I could move in and 12 hours later be in the frozen aisle looking at broccoli.
It made being a new place so much easier.
And what I wouldn’t give to have a map app like that for my life.
An app where all I had to do was search for what I wanted, and it would find it, tell me how to get there and reroute me around obstacles.
But, as we all know, there is no map.
So when we find ourselves in new places or experiences that we haven’t been before, we get nervous and a little anxious. We feel like we’re flying blind.
And it’s in those moments of the unknown that we have two options:
We can cross our fingers, close our eyes and hope that it magically all works out.
OR
We can take a deep breath and build the route step by step.
Neither choice is perfect, but the second choice gets us to where we want to go. The first one keeps us floating in limbo.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be talking more about what it looks like to build the route, but I’ll give you a sneak peek now:
You have to know who you are.
You have to know what’s driving the bus.
And you have to know how to take intentional action so things move in the right direction.
Notice, I didn’t say you had to know where you were going or how to get there….
So hit reply and send me your questions, thoughts, and wonderings about how to travel life without a map. I’ll answer a few in upcoming emails.
